The Kingdoms of Amalur IP, and by extension the abandoned MMORPG Project Copernicus, might have a fresh lease on life. Both IPs have been snapped up in a THQ Nordic acquisition announced today, with the company apparently eyeballing what to do with the dusty licenses next.
The announcement heralded the fact that THQ Nordic has locked down all things Kingdoms of Amalur, the fantasy RPG series put together by the now defunct 38 Studios. Many will likely recognize the studio’s name, which had a spectacular meltdown on both a gaming and political scale.
This new IP acquisition also ties with Project Copernicus, a planned MMORPG set in the Amalur world which only ever had a quick video tour back in 2012.
Information on just what THQ Nordic plans to do with the rights acquisitions is not clear, but the press release does state that the company’s Vienna, Austrai wing will handle “sales and distribution, evaluation of sequels & new content etc.” while the acquisition itself is being handled by THQ Nordic in Karlstad, Sweden.
Our Thoughts
Personally speaking, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an excellent RPG so it’d be nice to see that sort of game make its way back into the limelight. Of course, we’d like to see Project Copernicus become a more tangible ting, too, but it’s too early to know one way or the other what THQ Nordic has planned. We’ll certainly be hearing about it at some point later, though.
