One of the Victims of the Madden Esports Shooting is Suing EA

We’re returning to a story that continues to have more developments every few days at this point, that is the Madden esports shooting in Jacksonville, Florida. The latest news is that one of the shooting victims is suing EA along with a whole list of others for negligence.

Jacob Mitich was shot twice during the shooting and is now seeking damages against EA, the Chicago Pizza venue, the Jacksonville Landing Mall where the Chicago Pizza is located, and five other unnamed defendants. The suit alleges that the venue was unsafe and that EA failed to provide a safe and secure environment, amongst other complaints.

In a statement that accompanied the lawsuit, it was stated, “He trusted the event host and organizers, and believed that he was walking into a safe space. That trust was shattered when shots rang out in an over-crowded, since-shut-down, non-permitted space. Combined with an alleged abject failure to provide adequate security, the result was tragic. We are bringing this lawsuit to hold those responsible accountable, and to ensure that gamers like Jake are able to get together to pursue their passion without having to fear for their lives.”

In the lawsuit, attorneys describe Jacksonville Landing, the mall where the event was taking place as “a hub of dangerous, violent and too often, deadly activity.” It then goes on to cite stabbings and shootings that have happened at the mall in recent years. It also goes into detail about Mitich’s experience during the shooting and him recalling that he believed at the time that he was going to die. The lawsuit doesn’t specify an amount that he’s seeking.

This comes just days after EA announced that they would be donating $1 million to the shooting victims as well as opening the Jacksonville Tribute Fund which will go directly to victims and their families. On September 6th EA will be hosting a charity livestream where players can help with the efforts to raise money.
