Destiny 2 Steps on the Gas in Update 1.1.4

The speed of play in Destiny 2 should be seeing a pretty significant increase in acceleration as of today. Destiny 2 update 1.1.4, aka the “Go Fast” update, is on its way to the looter shooter as of today, bringing a sort of reverse psychology to the game: instead of nerfing things down to make it level, they’ve buffed things upward.

destiny 2 update 1.1.4

A developer commentary video featuring sandbox design lead Josh Hamrick explains the development team’s approach to the changes they’re making to Destiny 2 with this latest update, which took a look at weapons, abilities and character movement and elected to power them upwards.

“We looked at everything and said ‘Hey, here are a couple weapons that we feel like are in a really good spot’. And by really good spot they’re kinda hot. They’re probably too hot for D2,” said Hamrick. “In D1, people would have said – probably correctly – we would nerf those things. For this update, we said ‘These things are hot. Let’s bring everything else to them’.”

The process of bringing things upwards to parity with the so-called “hot” items affects both PvE and PvP. The movement modes for many Titans and Warlock subclasses have been adjusted to make them unique and fast, while the Hunter Arc Staff is getting increased attack range, faster dodge animation and faster attack animation. PvP will also be seeing sped-up player and Power ammo respawns.

While PvP certainly appears to be a focus, PvE players are going to reap the benefits as well, particularly with a 25% reduction of cooldown rate for Supers, heightened damage for every single type of weapon, a number of boosts to some weapon perks, and buffs to the Ability Cooldown Mods.

Our Thoughts

Now that’s more like it: don’t round everything down into a smooth, perfect sphere because you want to have the most balanced PvP shooter in the world, make weapons firing and ability use fun again. We’re glad that our space wizards are getting a boost for once.
