H1Z1 Playerbase Declines Over 90% Since June Peak

The H1Z1 playerbase is on a massive decline according to Steam Charts. The website shows that since June 2017 concurrent players have dropped from 150,000 to just 8,000 in the middle of February. For anyone keeping a close eye on the Battle Royale genre, this won’t come as too much of a surprise though as in that time we’ve seen both PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite rise in popularity. The percentage of decrease is a bit shocking, however. Before these two titles came onto the scene H1Z1 was the king of the hill when it came to Battle Royale games. But it’s highly unusual to see such a massive decline in such a short amount of time.

At the start of 2017, however, things looked very different for H1Z1. They attracted attention from eSports teams like Cloud9 and Luminosity Gaming. In April of 2017, an hour-long special aired on US television titled H1Z1: Fight for the Crown. The game struggled on Twitch though, reaching only 855k hours of watch time in a single day at its peak. That number might sound big but PUBG has had at least 1.2 million hours watched every day since March 2017. Fornite has also surged well ahead of H1Z1 in terms of Twitch views. Only once since October has H1Z1 views beat Fortnite’s daily view hours and that was for the TwitchCon Invitational.

Is this the beginning of the end for H1Z1? It does put a massive question mark on the future of H1Z1’s pro league which was announced in October. Since then there hasn’t been any news about the league from Daybreak or their partner Twin Galaxies. But this isn’t the end yet. Daybreak is still working on the game with a new patch introduced just a few days ago and it may be that no news is good news for the league. We’ll keep our fingers crossed as we continue to watch how the game progresses through the year.
