Last week, NetEase held a conference call with various financial analysts following its quarterly financial call where they announced their performance for the 4th quarter of 2018 and the year ending 2018. Only 1 analyst, Alex Poon from Morgan Stanley, asked about the progress of Diablo Immortal. 2 sets of answers were given by the NetEase executives, one in Chinese and one in English. It seems that Diablo Immortal is ready to launch from NetEase’s development point of view, but Activision Blizzard is holding out on the schedule.

Reply 1: Original reply in Mandarin Chinese

暗黑手游的发布情况,最后我们会跟暴雪同步来宣布什么时候推向市场。但是我们这边开发方面已经做了非常充分的准备和投入,我相信肯定不是开发上的问题。

Reply 1: Translated by MMO Culture from Mandarin Chinese

With regards to the launch of Diablo Immortal, we will announce a market launch date simultaneously with Blizzard. But on our side, development is already fully prepared and invested. I definitively believe there is no issue from the side of development (with regards to a launch date).

Reply 2: Original reply in English

Diablo Immortal, we are the co-developer on that game together with Blizzard. As to the exact launch timetable, I would encourage markets (?) to direct the question directly to Activision Blizzard as from a co-developer’s perspective, the game development is pretty much ready. Of course, there is always be space for us to optimize and enhance, but it is not any concern that the development side will cause any potential delay.

Netmarble today unveiled that characters from the Fairy Tail animated series are coming to the mobile role-playing game Knights Chronicle. Five characters from Fairy Tail will appear in Knights Chronicle: The main characters Natsu Dragneel, Lucy Heartfilia, Gray Fullbuster, Erza Scarlet, and Wendy Marvell. Also, the Erza Scarlet Advent Dungeon will reward players with four-star SSR Erza Scarlet upon completion, and players can enjoy the Erza Scarlet Advent Dungeons with half the stamina during the event. The update features a new Story Region, Tybalt the Capital, with 10 new stages for each difficulty level (easy/normal/hard).

Players can also play through the new storyline of the Fairy Tail characters. In celebration of the Fairy Tail collaboration licensed by KODANSHA, Knights Chronicle will give out 4-star Wendy Marvell to all players who check-in and even more rewards will be available through a 7-day check-in event. The Fairy Tail collaboration has started right now, and will continue until March 19, so players should act quickly to get in on the action in Knights Chronicle!

Developed using Unreal Engine 4 by indie developer Moai Games, Traha is publisher Nexon’s next flagship mobile MMORPG scheduled to launch in South Korea on 18 April. Today, more details about Traha is revealed, including the 2 warring countries which players must pledge their allegiance to. The hostile premise is pretty simple, as the nation of Vulcan worships the God of Fire, while the nation of Naiad worships the God of Water. Yes, different beliefs in gods start this war… But at least the main arch is simple to understand!

Japanese studios Alim and Orange Cube recently announced a new entry into the Brave Frontier series, titled Brave Frontier: Rogue Story. Rather than being a Free-to-Play mobile RPG, this is a Buy-to-Play game which costs 480 Japanese Yen (around USD 4.30) when it launched this March. Brave Frontier: Rogue Story is a single-player game with classic 2D graphics, along with old-school dungeon crawler and labyrinth elements. Players take the role of the titular rogue, and I suppose the quest is to save the princess trapped at the end.

For the past few articles on MU Origin 2, we have always talked about combat in the forms of PVE and PVP. Perhaps due to MU Online being developed several decades ago, it is lacking visual features such as skins and costumes. Since the first MU Origin, this feature has been further improved in MU Origin 2 with a huge selection of cosmetic items waiting for players to discover and unlock. In what seems like an in-game fashion wardrobe, let us take a quick look at what is being offered for characters to look cool, hip, and trendy!

Here are some tips on obtaining new cosmetic items:

• Majority of the skins and costumes are obtained through regular social and in-game events, and also festivals such as Christmas and Lunar New Year. Other methods include Dragonlord’s Treasure (see below) or various in-game PVE and PVP achievements.

• The quickest way to obtain skins and costumes is to spend Diamonds trying out your luck in the feature known as Dragonlord’s Treasure. This is similar to the gacha system found in most mobile games, and cash currency known as Diamonds is needed. However, players might also roll powerful new gears and exclusive mounts as well!

• Each skin or costume has 3 different versions: 7 days, 30 days, and permanent. Skins and costumes obtained from Dragonlord’s Treasure will fall into 1 of these 3 categories too.

• From what I observed, almost all skins and costumes will provide additional stats, which definitely gives the overall character BP (Battle Points) a significant boost.

• While rare, players can also head to the auction house (known as Market in MU Origin 2) and check out if players are selling any unbound skins or costumes. From what I see so far, most of them are of the time-limited variants, and no permanent ones. Items in the market are traded using Diamonds, and only unbounded ones can be exchanged.

MU Origin 2 launched last month in Southeast Asia on both Google Play and App Store, and it wasn’t until recently that I started playing. Having experienced how accessible the game is, I decided to do a series of videos showcasing how much progress will be made without topping up cash and playing in 1 hour blocks. The videos will not be edited, just pure gameplay directly uploaded to YouTube. If you need more information about MU Origin 2, do look up my previous articles about this mobile MMORPG. Here is Part 1 of this journey!

Having played a Warrior as my first character in MU Origin 2, I decided to go with the more damage-focused Archer class. Along with the Mage, she is definitely the most popular since gamers just love dealing high damage in their online games. There is gender-lock, which is similar to the original MU Online on PC, so no complains here. While some gamers might hate the automated system, I find that it is just a blessing without having to control too many functions on the small mobile screen. The starting experience is very well scripted, guiding new players seamlessly to locations and introducing new features when unlocked.

Here are some highlights throughout my first hour starting off as the Archer in MU Origin 2:

Positives

• Generous rewards system – Players are rewarded generously with various items and currencies when reaching several different new milestones (level, combat power, etc) and after experiencing a mock-up version of new unlocked modes.

• Equipment changes appearance – While many other mobile MMORPG titles are taking a shortcut with how players’ characters look in-game, MU Origin 2 stays true to the action RPG genre by having each pieces of equipment changing how a character looks, including weapons. There is also a costume skin feature, but we will touch on that in later articles.

• Wings system returns – An iconic feature of MU Online are the character wings, which is also in MU Origin 2. Upgrading the wings to different levels will unlock not just increased stats, but also new appearances as well. I do wonder how many levels and looks of wings there are, but I am assuming at least 20? We shall see, but it is good to be floating around!

• PVE dungeons – I am a huge fan of Diablo and Diablo II, hence grinding out new loot in dungeons (although automated here) never gets boring. This feature opens up really fast as well for new characters to experience, which is definitely a big bonus. Do take note of the 3 difficulties, and the Legendary loot (orange) only dropping in the toughest Hell mode.

• Classic PVE modes – Within the hour, classic PVE modes from MU Online such as Devil Square and Blood Castle are unlocked. While I am not sure if these modes stayed true to the original, I have certainly heard about them. Both modes give generous rewards upon completion, including gears and EXP, which certainly aided my progress to level 100.

Negatives

• Automated combat – While I think I am asking too much, I did observed that the range between character and targets are pretty short for the Archer class. Yes, players should be manual when facing tougher monsters, but the dodge skill should activate automatically when being mobbed by a certain amount of enemies. Just a really small issue though 🙂

• Upgrading skills – Normally, there would be a button to just “Quick Upgrade” all skills to the highest possible level in most mobile MMORPG titles. However, in MU Online 2, players would need to reach level 100 or attain a VIP level to access this function. It is irritating to manually up the skill levels, but level 100 is within reach in just 1 hour.

[Game signup] It is rare to have Korean PC MMORPG titles launching in the western market these days, but Astellia was recently announced. Publisher Barunson E&A might be an unfamiliar name, but the Korean company has been around since 1997 starting out as YTV Communication. With Astellia, its upcoming fantasy PC MMORPG, Barunson E&A is looking to make a huge impact in the western gaming market this year. In this interview, we find out more about the company, Astellia, and ambitions for the future. Read on for more info!

Q: Please introduce yourselves to everyone reading this interview.

A: My name is Wes Conner, I am the Studio Producer for Astellia with BE&A out of Irvine, California.

Q: Not many gamers might know Barunson E&A, and some might mistake the company as Barunson Interactive, developer of Dragonica. Kindly introduce your company to our readers 😊

A: Barunson E&A is a publishing studio focused on bringing AAA Games to the Western market. We’re a team that’s passionate about creating the best online gaming experience for our players. As a publisher, BE&A is dedicated to bringing players and great games together, while providing industry-best services through a secure account system, well-supported customer service, and a gamer-centric approach to our community.

Q: I understand that Barunson E&A has opened an office in North America. Why the decision to expand now? Which regions will the new subsidiary oversee?

A: Our NA Office has been opened to give us a direct channel into the Western Market and from there we will service both NA & EU Regions, supporting three languages at launch: EN, DE, FR.

Q: With most game companies pivoting towards mobile games, why is Barunson E&A starting a new journey in the English market with a PC title?

A: Astellia is a 6-year long labor of love, and the vision behind this game has been a driving force within the project. We know many studios are shifting their focus to mobile games, it makes solid business sense with lower investments and the potential for large returns on the investment. Astellia is focused on providing players with a return to the classic MMO tenants, and this shift in the market only makes us more firm in our belief that players are waiting for the next MMORPG that is built to last, instead of all these short term projects we keep seeing.

Q: Gaming giant Nexon is the publisher of Astellia in South Korea. Why the decision to self-publish it for the English market?

A: The western gaming community is remarkably different when compared to the Eastern counterpart, with this in mind it seemed obvious to us we would need a Western Office to provide western services.

Q: The development team of Astellia, Studio 8, is listed as an affiliate of Barunson E&A. Could you elaborate on this partnership? Does it mean that changes to the game can be made very quickly?

A: Barunson E&A is the majority owner of Studio8, in Korea, they share a single office building. We view our team as a global operation and coordinate as such. Our goal is to establish a clear channel of communication between the western region and the Dev Team at Studio8.

Q: The South Korean server has just launched a few weeks ago. Does that mean the English version will be very close to the original in terms of updates and content?

A: We have a key list of changes that will be required for the Western Launch, these are based on our experiences playing western games and collecting feedback from the western players who have participated in the Korean version. Westernization of the game has been the main focus of our work for the last several months.

Q: The Closed Beta is announced to be starting this summer. Could you provide us with more details on the current progress of the game?

A: The Korean version is live now, on our side we are working with the developers to prepare the game for western service. This process is in-depth and lengthy but it will give us time to convert various game aspects you have seen in the Korean region to something more favorable in the west. Beyond the content changes, we are also working diligently to process the localization, which requires a large amount of in-house review and revision.

Q: There are many MMORPG players who would prefer each class having both genders. Is this available in Astellia?

A: Currently the KR Build is fully gender-locked, but based on input from the community we are working to make both genders available for each class. We currently plan to have 2 classes un-gender locked by launch with the others following until all classes have equal options. For classes that are unlocked after launch, we will make sure players can change their characters one time for free.

Q: What are the key features or elements which set Astellia apart from other PC MMORPG titles on the market?

A: If I had to pick one feature it is the Astell System. Astellia offers +30 unique Astells who serve as companions throughout the game. Each Astell has its own backstory, skill set, combo’s and roles. These features combine to give players a degree of flexibility that is not common in games. By summoning different astells, up to three at a time, players can create effective combo strategies or have the astel support them as healers, tanks, damage dealers etc.

Q: Obviously Astels play a major role in the game. Could you tell us how can they be obtained, and what kind of support do they provide in battles?

A: Astels are primarily obtained through normal gameplay progression such as, completing main storyline quests, and fighting your way through dungeons. Each Astel obtained expands a players arsenal of tools that can be used in combat.

Ranging from tanks holding the attention of monsters so you can get off your biggest AoE attacks. Support providing life-sustaining heals and buffs from the back lines. To damage dealers making short work of unwary enemies, or preventing escape with crowd control abilities.

Q: It seems that the team is not bashful about Astellia using the “holy trinity” combination for its combat system. Does it mean that players must rely on certain classes to defeat dungeons with no alternate solutions?

A: One of the core aspects of early development plans for Astellia involved removing some of these limitations by opening up new avenues to experiment with through the Astel system. In short, players should feel that their class still fills a specific role within a group, while removing many of the usual shortcomings that often came along with it.

With the introduction of Astels, players are able to summon battle companions that can either augment their classes strengths or offset certain weaknesses. Which provides a lot more flexibility in group dynamics. For example, attempting to speed clear a dungeon by picking up an extra DPS in place of a Tank, while making careful use of Tank Astels. We expect to continue seeing a lot of interesting and unique ways players make use of this system to explore content their own way.

Q: With the “holy trinity” system, it seems traditionally players favor DPS classes. Is there any potential solution to incentivize players to go for support classes?

A: Each player is able to summon a maximum of three astels at a time, and in the astel pool there are +30 astels which offer a wide array of abilities to players. A Warrior Character can choose to summon healer astels if they are taking heavy damage, or a dps astel if they want to push more damage etc. The key to this system is thinking ahead and preparing for your encounters, with the proper meta build players will be able to overcome many difficulties.

Q: Is Astellia geared more towards PVE or PVP? Will players be at a disadvantage if they favor just one?

A: Between Avalon for PVP, Legendary Dungeons for PVE and offering both PVE & PVP Arenas I sincerely believe Astellia is in a unique position to cater to both. We do not want to exclude one player type for the other, and participating in both content types will yield the highest rewards.

Q: Could you introduce some of the PVE and PVP modes to our readers?

A: Avalon is a persistent PvP map where three factions vie for control on a weekly basis by PVP’ing and completing objectives. Avalon is designed to allow both large scale combat but also allow for small teams to contribute, and play a meaningful role in the warfare. Outside of Avalon we have multiple dungeon types, solo, group, and legendary. Then for arenas, we have group and solo variants, both of which have your standard pvp setup as well as a pve arena where the player/s defend their crystal from wave after wave of monsters against the timer.

Q: The big topic these days for games are loot boxes. Will they be in Astellia? And what should players expect from the monetization model in the game?

A: Astellia will be Buy to Play with micro-transactions in game. We have embraced the motto of “Play to Win”, what this means is the Pay to Win mechanics you see in other regions are going to be adapted into rewards for our build. As an example, instead of paying for full heal potions, you will earn them through time played or achievements etc. In our current business model, we do not have plans to sell Loot Crates for money, but they may be available as some form of in-game reward for in-game activity.

Q: Other than text localization, are there any changes being made for Astellia?

A: Most definitely changes are being made for the western market; we are unlocking genders, addressing Pay to Win mechanics, reviewing the progression, and considering content that is more popular in the west.

Q: Will there be IP restrictions for access to Astellia? And will it be available on Steam?

A: Currently we do not plan to block countries that are outside of the serviced regions, however we are still working on those finer details. We don’t want to leave anyone behind, but we also must respect any of the licensing contracts other publishers may have.

Steam is always an option as a possible distribution channel, but for the time being we plan to self-publish.

Q: Last year, Barunson E&A showcased several trailers for mobile games in South Korea such as Project EX and Project B. Would it be safe to say that they are arriving for the global gamers as well?

A: Barunson has many projects running behind the scenes, including the mobile games you have listed, but our current priority is to focus on preparing and launching Astellia. Then, from there we can consider additional titles and opportunities.

Q: Please say some final words for this interview to our readers and gamers! 😊

A: It was a pleasure to have this Q&A, I hope my answers provide some insight into the Astellia project and I look forward to communicating with the community more as we approach this summer. As always make sure you keep an eye on our website & social medias channels! Teaser Website Facebook Twitter

Pearl Abyss recently announced it will release 3 succession classes on 28 February for Black Desert Mobile as part of its 1st anniversary update in South Korea. The succession system was first announced in November 2018, when Pearl Abyss revealed that players who do not want to awaken their characters and wield a new weapon will “soon” have the option of an progression route. Characters who have already awakened can also take part in a one-time quest to change into the succession class for free. This free chance to swap over is also open to all new players. The first 3 succession classes are for Warrior, Ranger, and Valkyrie.

First revealed in April 2018 and showcased at ChinaJoy 2018, Tencent Games recently announced that Perfect World Mobile will officially launch in China on 6 March. Based on the original Perfect World Online and developed by Perfect World, this mobile version has already gone through months of Closed Beta tests. Also, you can see that Tencent Games has again asserted its dominance of the Chinese games market by having Perfect World Mobile on its platform, rather than developer Perfect World launching the game itself.

The 3 main races are all here for the official launch, including Human, Untamed, and Winged Elf. The 5 confirmed classes are Human Wizard, Human Blademaster, Untamed Barbarian, Male Winged Elves Archer, and Female Winged Elves Cleric. The 6th class is teased as “Fairy”, but no other details were revealed thus far. Do note that these class names are from the PC English version of Perfect World Online, and might change if Perfect World Mobile ever launches for the western market. The holy trinity combo is still here too.

Main features of the game includes the classic character wings, flying mounts, costumes, and aerial combat was touted since the beginning. Perfect World Mobile also claims to have “over 60,000 square kilometre” of land to explore, but it would not be the first time a game feature is exaggerated in press releases. Based on the 14-year old Perfect World IP, will this mobile MMORPG fulfill expectations? We will try to play the game at launch, so stay tuned!

Personally, I have swore off any games by EA after the experience I had with the Sim City reboot. It is never alright for the accounting and business executives to dictate how a game should be developed for maximized profits, something which EA has been accused of over the years leading to the downfall of many games. Anthem, the new game from EA BioWare, reeks of such decisions based on comparisons between the old-school BioWare titles and post-EA ones. It is alarming when even shady publications such as IGN gave Anthem a low score on its review, while GameSpot tried its very hardest not to publicly slam the game.

Of course, then there are the reviews and comments from popular YouTube content makers. Other than Anthem being plagued with technical errors and hundreds of bugs, some game design choices were taken into question. Despite being announced earlier, the central hub (basically the town) feels eerily weird with only 1 player walking around instead of being an actual multiplayer central, like a MMORPG (a term which EA has avoided). Other than the awesome flying through the gorgeous map (which is just 1) and flashy combat, everything else from story to grinding to boss fights were taken into question.

EA is known to unceremoniously close down studios which have under performed over the course of a few games, and I would suppose Anthem is heading to be the second under BioWare after the heap of steaming poop known as Mass Effect: Andromeda. From what I know, some big gaming companies tie bonus payments and financial benefits to scores from Metacritic, which at this point does not bode well for BioWare. According to the latest reviews, even the official Day 1 launch patch did not manage to fix the various major bugs.

Square Enix is known to flood the market with random mobile games in Japan, and most recently it has announced a new one titled Last Idea. Is this an indication that Square Enix has finally lost its mojo and admitting it has ran out of ideas? 😀 According to the storyline, players take on the role as a treasure hunter who meets a loli who has lost her memory. As usual, players will get to adventure across a fantasy RPG world and recruit new companions along the way. Reactive gameplay control by players is touted as a feature, but there is no actual footage right now. Square Enix is scheduled to launch Last Idea in Japan this spring.

MU Origin 2 just had its first massive content update since launching in Southeast Asia earlier this year, adding in the high-level Abyssal Realm region. With a minimum level requirement of 280, you can bet that this region is filled with dangers all around. Oh, did I mention that it is Free-for-All PK in all the maps here? With my own character just nearing level 300, let us look at the new features MU Origin 2 has prepared for us in the abyss.

Introduction to the Abyssal Realm

• As mentioned previously, there is a minimum level requirement of 280 to enter.

• Unless you change the PK settings, everyone can be killed and attacked in the maps of Abyssal Realm.

• All maps in this region are cross-server. This means that players from other servers will be entering all maps in the Abyssal Realm. Personally, I feel that it is better for the Abyssal Realm to be Server vs Server, instead of totally free for all PK. Even high-level players will be annoyed at the constant killing with no support most of the time.

• Here is a look at the servers involved:

Dimensional Merchant

• This is a special NPC which appears in the Elveland map in the Abyssal Realm only during the first 3 days of the update.

• At 12:00 PM server time of the 3 days, players must find this NPC somewhere on the map.

• He sells tons of valuable and exclusive items just for 1 Diamond! Even though it is cash currency, the price is just unbelievable!

• Of course, I was lucky and immediately found him once the server opened during the first day. Subsequently, I could see players killing each other to purchase items from him. Talk about a big shopping massacre!

Advanced bounty quests

• This is a really common quest system found in most mobile MMORPG titles, and I was wondering why it was missing from MU Origin 2.

• Basically, players get to choose from 1 of the 3 quests available on the screen at each time, with the missing slot being refreshed once the selected quest is completed.

• Of course, players get to refresh all 3 quests for free a few times, with the rest requiring Diamonds to do so.

• While it seems easy, do not forget that all the quests are on maps in the Abyssal Realm, which means players will be killing each other for the mobs… and no reason!

Crystal Mine

• This is more of a bonus map for high-level players to gather some items, including gold, runes, pink diamonds, and more based on the colors of the crystals.

• Once again, open PK is live here, so players might be killing to gather the rarer crystals for bonus items. Nowhere is safe in this update!

Quinton’s Revenge

• With high-level players from 5 servers congregating in 1 map for open-world boss raids, it was always a tall order for me and my server from the start.

• Not only do we have to battle against players, players have to stop an advancing Demon Lord Quinton from reaching the only safe haven in the map as well! Talk about total chaos!

Golden Force

• Similar to Quinton’s Revenge, Golden Force is an open-world event held in the new Abyssal Realm, where open PK is fair everywhere.

• There are no indications on where the Golden Force mob spawns, so players have to go around the map finding them.

According to various sources, Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 studio ArenaNet is preparing to layoff staff soon. This is due to parent company, Korean gaming giant NCsoft restructuring as well, which is affecting all subsidiaries. An unannounced game project from ArenaNet is also cancelled. According to tweets from a current staff, management has yet to confirmed who are being cut, but has been transparent with the news. Last month, NCsoft also laid off staff from another subsidiary, Iron Tiger Studios. The studio was formed to lead NCsoft’s charge into the western mobile gaming market, but it has failed to launch a single game.

The face of Nintendo in the western market at game events throughout the years, he will certainly be missed. It is time for someone to step up and fill his presidential shoes, and Bowser has been elected to the seat. We are talking about Doug Bowser, who is currently the Vice President of Sales in Nintendo America. The coincidence with Mario’s arch-nemesis, King Bowser, is now the talk of the town. Will Bowser set the company on fire and lead it to a new era? Also, will the Nintendo Switch Mini debut soon?

MapleStory M today added a new content update that brings a multitude of new material for players, including 3 new explorer classes, improved equipment enhancement systems, and more. The three new unique explorers includes the swift thief Shadower who deals close-combat damage with a dagger, the Hero who uses “Two-Handed Sword” and “Two-Handed Axe” for powerful blows to enemies, and the Arch Mage, the flashiest magic class of Maple World who uses spells with Ice and Lightning properties to annihilate enemies.

Players will also be able to enjoy Emblem Enhancement, a new system where Emblem Trace can be extracted from Elite items to make Emblem equipment more powerful. It also features Exaltation where players must use Elite equipment that is identical to the base equipment or utilize Exaltation Stones as material during Exaltation. Additionally, there are new class growth support events and Lunar New Year celebrations for all in MapleStory M!

That’s why we’re so excited that there’s a Guild Wars 2 WvW mount coming out. This mount won’t just get you around the battlefield quickly, though there is that benefit.

The Warclaw comes with three special abilities that will enhance your WvW gameplay. The first is Battle Maul. When you jump into battle while mounted your Warclaw will maul your enemy before it disappears. This is your standard attack and dismount move.

The second ability is Chain Pull and from a WvWer’s standpoint possibly the most exciting of the three abilities. Those on Warclaws will be able to help pull down gates to gain entrance to whatever structure the zerg is currently focused on. This is an advanced ability which almost certainly means that it will have to be unlocked. As of writing this, pre-embargo we don’t yet have that information.

The final ability is Evade. Get a quick burst of speed and evade attacks allowing you to break through enemy lines. This will be especially useful in Castle sieges where getting a team through the hall quickly to attack from behind will add a very interesting new element to the event.

The Warclaw is will be available on February 26th for anyone who owns Path of Fire. While we may have to wait a week before we can play with it we can see it now in this fantastic trailer.

As someone who is a long time fan of WvW, I’m especially intrigued to see what kind of impact Warclaw will have on WvW. Though I suspect that having the mount will become a requirement for taking part in the game. This has the potential to leave some people behind who haven’t bought Path of Fire and have no plans to do so. Expect WvW queues to come back for the next few days as everyone wants to give the new mount a try.

If you’re interested in The Warclaw it can only be obtained in WvW but, it can be summoned anywhere other mounts can be summoned. That means you will be able to use it in the open world. However, the Chain Pull ability is something that has very limited use in the main PvE part of the world. So, while it will be fun for getting around with it may not have much utility. Still, how many Charr are we going to see running around riding on Warkitties? The answer is a lot…including me.

Some players like a break in their current gameplay style, others may want to see how another class fits their raid composition. Perhaps you would like to see how a newer melee class holds up with your Arena team? The main hurdle for every player in World of Warcraft’s end-game, no matter the class, is of course gear. End game performance isn’t entirely about skill (or how hard your Paladin friend can hit the buttons with their face) but instead how your stats are affected by your equipable gear. This week we will be diving into some of the fastest methods to gear your alts and get them ready for raiding.

With a freshly level-capped 120 character, your gear may be relatively hit-or-miss in terms of its quality. Most players who quest through Kul Tiras and Zandalar will be outfitted in questing greens and blues, barely breaching item-level 300. The first step for freshly dinged players is to begin hitting Normal and Heroic level dungeons and scoring some loot off of the bosses contained within. Most players may find themselves easily falling into Normals, as Heroic not only has a higher item-level requirement for entry but a much higher difficulty with the launch of Season 2 in Battle for Azeroth. This is perhaps the best method to begin arming your hero of Azeroth, but one can quickly accelerate their growth with the newest gameplay introduced into WoW.

At item-level 320, your character will unlock access to Warfronts. Locked to a rotating cycle for each faction, Warfronts feature dynamic battlefields besieged by both the Horde and the Alliance in a struggle for dominance. Each Warfront cycles through different phases, working through four separate steps that are vital to leveling your character.

The first, the Contribution Phase, is locked to your specific region (ie. only US players contribute to the US Horde War Effort in Darkshore). Each day three daily quests will be open that will require profession turn-ins which reward a large amount of Azerite. These quests are vital for leveling up your Heart of Azeroth, which will, in turn, unlock more traits in your Azerite Gear. This means that as your Heart’s item level increases, so will your gear as you unlock their central Azerite Traits. This contribution phase lasts for anywhere from three to five days.

After the Contribution Phase is the Assault Phase. This is the most vital part of gearing up your character, as every successful Warfront will reward higher item-level gear, as well as a Heroic-Raid Tier quality item once per Warfront Cycle. For the Battle for Stromgarde, players with item-level 320 gear can enter the warfront and receive 350 gear for winning. At ilvl 335, players can enter the Battle for Darkshore and receive item-level 375 gear. Both warfronts are repeatable and share separate cycles, meaning that shortly after completing Stromgarde several times, you’ll quickly be ready to step into Darkshore.

It’s also heavily recommended you start hitting Heroic Level Island Expeditions. Each week your Artifact Knowledge for the Heart of Azeroth grows, reducing how much Azerite you need to level it up. Heroic Expeditions not only give a sizable chunk of Azerite and contribute to the weekly quest for 2500 Azerite but also have a higher chance to drop Azerite-rewarding Quest Items.

With a large collection of Darkshore gear in your pockets and your Heart well on its way to healing Azeroth, you’ll finally be ready to step into higher-level content in the end-game. There are two feasible options for quickly amassing gear on top of regularly raiding; Mythic+ Dungeons and Rated PvP.

Mythic+ Dungeons are the most active end-game content in Battle For Azeroth. Due to their importance, they’re almost mandatory to complete at least one every week in order to maximize your gearing curve. Using a Mythic Keystone, players can enter increasingly difficult Battle for Azeroth dungeons in a time-attack mode. Completing dungeons with progressively higher keystones will result in greater rewards not only at the dungeon’s end but also in your Challenger’s Cache at the end of the week.

The biggest reward from the cache is Titan Residuum, a new currency introduced in Season 2. This Residuum can be turned into Ethereal vendors in Dazar’alor and Boralus for high-level gear, including specific ilvl 415 pieces to kit out your character. While you can also scrap Azerite Gear to earn Titan Residuum, it’s simply far more efficient to hit increasingly higher level Mythic+ dungeons. We detailed the progressive rewards and more about Mythic+ dungeons several weeks back.

Conversely, Rated Player vs. Player content also offers higher item level gear that, for some players, can quickly result in incredibly powerful rewards. While players can earn lower item level gear after winning Random Battlegrounds or Arena Skirmishes, Rated content offers higher-tier rewards more regularly. Winning in Arenas or Rated Battlegrounds can reward you with item level 380 gear in Season 2 well below titled ratings. Increasing your rating to 1400 can allow you to earn ilvl 390 gear after each match.

Winning organized PvP of any kind, whether it be Skirmishes, Random Battlegrounds or Rated Content will reward you with Conquest. Each week players can farm for a set piece of gear by gaining Conquest, scaling in power for each time you fill your Conquest bar. While this loot is preset, you know what you’re getting each week and can target specific pieces for a slow but gradual gain. Players who haven’t completed any of their Conquest Bar over the Season can fill it up multiple times each week, using it as a catch-up tool to gear their characters. After filling their Conquest Bar (or earning 500 Conquest) players will also unlock a weekly chest at your War Headquarters. You can check out our guide on Rated PvP to get an idea of how item levels scaled in Season One and how they work in Season Two.

Last, but certainly not least, there is, of course, the Raiding Scene. With the release of the Battle for Dazar’alor, both Heroic and Mythic Uldir are now far easier to do with a pick-up group due to overgearing. Heroic Uldir still rewards item-level 370 gear and can be used as a stepping stone if you find your luck lacking between Mythic+ and Rated PvP. Of course, once you’ve hit the big-time, you can also step into the siege on Zandalar’s shores and pillage its bosses for item level 400 gear in Heroic BFDA.

But these are just our suggestions. How do you gear up your alts, or even your first main character, in Battle for Azeroth? Let us know down below!

To say that MAD CATZ has a stilted legacy is a mild understatement to veteran gamers. Growing up with the first generations of 3D consoles, MAD CATZ peripherals were everywhere in the gaming market, especially with the dawn of the Nintendo Gamecube and Playstation 2. These were certainly not the paragons of quality gamers came to expect from first-party peripherals, but that would quickly change with the diversifying market of PC Gaming. MAD CATZ has always been known for mastering one thing: mice.

The R.A.T. line of mice has extended back to before the company’s bankruptcy and subsequent buyout in 2017, with quality always at the forefront alongside its undeniably futuristic design aspirations. One of the most celebrated of the line, the original R.A.T. 5, is still to this day touted as a paragon of the series. With the relaunching of the MAD CATZ brand, the company has done the same with its line of mice, updating them with newer features for newer hardware. Alongside the R.A.T. 4+, 6+ and Pro S3, today we’ll be reviewing the R.A.T. 8+, touted as being, ‘designed for the professional gamer.’

A Return To Shifting Excellence

Like the mice that came before it, the R.A.T. 8+ is gritty, futuristic, and utterly customizable. Being one of the best-known features of the line, the 8+ is just as adjustable as its brethren, from the chassis to the grips and beyond. The actual width of the mouse as it comes in the packaging is rather standard, matching the original R.A.T 8 at just over two inches. The 8+ also comes with tools on-board to assist with adjusting its shape to meet your exact specifications and needs.

Featuring adjustable thumb wings and palm rest, the 8+ allows gamers of all ages and sizes to maximize their comfort around its central frame and modify the grip as needed. Even with both rests fully extended, the 8+ is still just as sturdy as when it is closed, owing to its solid-chassis construction. Contained additionally in its packaging are a host of grip-pads, allowing users to switch their rests to a more textured face, or wing both their thumb and pinkie rests for palm-gripped players.

Aside from being a sturdy piece of hardware, the R.A.T. 8+ also comes with the same modifiable weight as its predecessor. Hosting three 18 gram weights, the mouse even without them is incredibly heavy owed to its metal-body, weighing in at 145 grams. While it gives the 8+ a sturdy, almost powerful feel players who rely on swift and sudden reactions may find the weight jarring as they adapt to it in their work and gameplay.

However, despite this customization, I found my somewhat larger-sized hands consistently struggling to find a comfortable rest on the mouse. Being a palm-grip player, I enjoy larger mice such as the Razer Naga or Corsair M65, which allow me to make as much contact as possible. Using the R.A.T. 8+, even with every aspect of it fully extended, I continued to feel as if my hand was draped over the edges, instead of hugging it as necessary. This, on more than one occasion, caused strain after several hours, with most of my weight falling onto the palm rest directly behind the first knuckles of my fingers.

Quick To The Click

Boasting a PIXART PMW 3389 Optical Sensor, the 8+ certainly isn’t lacking in robust movement, able to accelerate up to 50G’s in a near instant. Tracking is wonderfully optimized, with no detectable drifting in any movement on standard speeds. The preset DPI’s, while extremely fluid, are perhaps a touch odd. Unlike other currently available gaming mice, each DPI setting that comes out of the package is either just a touch too fast, or a miter too slow, making original adjustments to the feel of the mouse awful and clunky.

The overall build quality of the 8+ is unquestionable in its design, featuring eleven programmable buttons and a thumb-based macro button for quick reactions, all built as sturdily as the chassis. The wheel itself is mechanical in nature, giving wonderful feedback without the droning clicking that cheaper mice like to whine. The main mice buttons are built on Omron switches, guaranteed for 50 Million clicks over the mouse’s lifetime, though their latency is comparable to that of the Logitech G Pro. While I haven’t nearly reached that number, I certainly prefer the continued theming of longevity over speed.

Frankly, the 8+ just feels good to use in all manner of games and programs. It is just as quick on the uptake in games like Overwatch as it is in graphical design programs like GIMP 2. There’s never any issue in the accuracy using the R.A.T.; I never feel like I’m moving too quickly and losing control of my cursor. From fine movements in video editors and the hectic actions in the battlefields of World of Warcraft, the 8+ holds its own.

Customization? Can’tomization.

This is where the R.A.T. falls apart at the seams. Despite having a readily accessible button to switch user profiles, up to 4 for different presets, the touted Flux Interface for the 8+ and the rest of its lineup is dreadfully absent at the time of review. Similar to Razer’s Synapse or the Corsair Utility Engine, the Flux Interface is supposedly designed to offer the ultimate level of customization to every button and digital setting of the R.A.T. lineup. The program does not automatically install, as it does with the Razer series of mice, nor is it available on the MAD CATZ website. This means that every digital feature, including the touted Chameleon RBG Lighting, is as stock as it comes.

Overall 7/10

The R.A.T. 8+ shows an incredible amount of promise in its form and figure, but has a number of setbacks that stop it from really meeting the baseline needs of the ‘professional gamer,’ it’s looking to sell to. While it features an incredible depth and breadth in customization, and its core is sturdy enough to stand the test of time, its versatility causes problems for players who fall along the outliers. A distinct lack of digital interface means that personalization for the 8+ truly only goes skin deep, meaning that its true potential simply cannot be unlocked.

Pros:

+ Incredibly customizable exterior for a wide range of users
+ Sturdy form and electronics built for longevity
+ Accurate even at higher DPI speeds

Cons:

– No Flux Interface means buttons, colors and digital customization cannot be altered
– Weighty, even with extra weight removed
– Uncomfortable for those with larger hands
