PUBG Wins PC Game of the Year and Sets Seven World Records

It’s been a very big year for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds as evidenced by the battle royale shooter’s accolades at this year’s Golden Joystick Awards. Notable PUBG award wins include the Golden Joystick for PC Game of the Year and a total of seven Guinness World Records.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds secured both the PC Game of the Year win as well as the Best Multiplayer Game win at the Golden Joysticks, while also being confirmed as a holder of seven unique Guinness World Records:

  • Fastest time to sell 1 million units for a Steam Early Access game
  • Fastest Steam Early Access game to gross $100 million
  • First videogame to reach 2 million concurrent players on Steam
  • Most actively played game on Steam
  • Most concurrent players for a Steam Early Access game
  • Most concurrent players on Steam for a non-Valve videogame
  • First non-Valve videogame to be the most played game on Steam

The awards and accolades cap off an already sterling year for the title, which has since sold over 20 million copies and beat out Valve’s Dota 2 for concurrent players at over two million players online at one time.

Our Thoughts

While those wins are most definitely impressive and certainly worthy of merit, we also can’t help but wonder what sort of precedent this sets for developers and publishers looking to release early access titles. Is this going to start another attempt at the “WoW Killer” disease that swept over many MMO titles? Will early access become the new day one release? There’s lots of ramifications to consider, but for now we’ll at least congratulate PUBG on the awards.
